President’s Welcome
Hello, and welcome to the web site for the International Museum Theatre Alliance (Americas Chapter.) If you are reading this, you probably have an interest in the use of theatre and theatrical techniques in cultural organizations, so I’m so glad you found us! Please take some time to explore our site and the resources available, and then I hope you will become a member!
Since 1990 IMTAL has served as the professional association for practitioners of museum theatre. Although many definitions of “museum theatre” exist (read some of them here) IMTAL welcomes everyone – zoos, aquariums, historical sites, parks, and all types of museums that use creative dramatics, living history, storytelling, theatre performance, and all manner of theatrical techniques as well as the theatres, artists and performers that work with them. There is so much to be learned from each other, so please join the conversations!
IMTAL is an affiliate of the American Association of Museums, and is a sister organization of IMTAL-Europe and IMTAL-Asia Pacific. IMTAL promotes and advocates for the use of museum theatre and supports its members in improving the quality of their programs. We host a variety of events throughout the year and publish a quarterly magazine. We are also on Facebook and Twitter. (Our members are also some of the most fun individuals I have ever met!)
I believe theatre and theatrical techniques can be some of the most effective methods of communicating with museum visitors, whether it’s a controversial topic, a complicated explanation, or something just for fun. Since I discovered museum theatre, IMTAL has been a source of information, ideas, support, and wonderful friendships. I am proud to be serving as its current President!
If you have questions or comments about IMTAL, our activities, our web site, or museum theatre in general, please do not hesitate to contact me at President “at” imtal “dot” org.
Thanks for visiting, and I hope to see you soon!
