The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis (www.childrensmuseum.org) is seeking qualified applicants for the Director of Interpretation.  This position

·         provides the vision for the content and operations of the world’s largest children’s museum’s interpretative family learning experiences throughout its exhibits, galleries and theaters 

·         develops and implements interpretation and facilitation programs of the highest quality that foster family learning

·         ensures the operational effectiveness of the interpretative experiences within the Museum including those within: exhibits, galleries and theaters 

·         stays current on effective interpretative and theater techniques and works to implement new experiences in museum learning environments to grow new and repeat attendance and further engage audiences

·         works collaboratively with all division directors to provide an effective and extraordinary learning environment/experience for visitors

 

REQUIREMENTS:

·         Bachelor’s degree in liberal arts field from an accredited college or university.  Master’s degree preferred. 

·         Strong background in theatre, arts, humanities or sciences or related areas including, but not limited to, early childhood/elementary/secondary education, and/or arts administration or museum studies.

·         Comprehensive knowledge of how children and families learn; Minimum of five years experience in museum interpretation work, or formal or informal educational environments and/or theatre or combination of all three.

·         Five years of leadership and management experience. 

·         Sound knowledge of acting and interpretative techniques and educational concepts and methods that dictate strong interpretation programs.

·         Proven skills in motivating and inspiring staff by keeping tasks focused on strategic direction and results.  Ability to model a collaborative work environment, through interactions with peers and staff reporting to others.  Ability to bring a very diverse staff together to create a working team.

·         Proven leadership skills in mentoring and nurturing a diverse staff.  Ability to develop/implement appropriate professional development programs for staff.  Personally exhibits the belief in life-long learning.

·         Excellent communication skills; i.e. outstanding interpersonal skills, both verbal and written, ability to “get along” and nurture relationships with a wide variety of people; good organizational skills and ability to distinguish and communicate priorities and processes.

·         Experience in developing and sustaining a network of external professional and stakeholder relationships and the skills to negotiate, develop partnerships and represent the institution in development efforts.

Lilly Theater Manager
Children's Museum of Indianapolis

Provides leadership and management of the Lilly Theater within The Children's Museum of Indianapolis. Oversees theater operations to ensure the theater is modified and maintained in accordance with the highest TCM standards. Supervises the Lilly Theater full- and part-time staff. Works in tandem with the Director of Interpretation on new show initiatives and current shows that provide the highest quality immersive and transformational experiences for the children and families who visit the museum. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITES:
1. In tandem with the Director of Interpretation and theater staff, provides leadership on new show initiatives that provide the highest quality immersive and transformational experiences for the children and families who visit the museum, including long range planning.
2. Is knowledgeable about museum exhibits (current and upcoming) and family learning as it relates to theatre performances.
3. Ensures that full- and part-time staff are provided with training and professional development opportunities pertaining to exhibits and family learning.
4. Provides recommendations and completes written proposals for Lilly Theater productions and special programs to ensure the most appropriate and highest quality shows.
5. In collaboration with the Director of Interpretation selects Lilly Theater production/design team for each production.
6. Provides leadership with the production design team and participates in the pre-production planning for new shows.
7. Negotiates contracts and hires production/design team. Negotiates contracts and hires actors after auditions/casting by play director.
8. Negotiates with playwrights and publishers to obtain rights and payment of royalty and permission on cut scripts.
9. Directs at least one show per year.
10. Assists the Director of Interpretation, the Lilly Theatre Staff and production team throughout the pre-production process and throughout the run.
11. Ensures that artistic and technical production quality is maintained throughout the run of shows, attending sufficient rehearsals to ensure full knowledge of each production's needs and keeping the Director of Interpretation informed of changes.
12. Maintains expert level of knowledge of show schedules for school groups and public. Promotes shows through external and internal collaboration and cross-departmental communications.
13. Ensures that the Lilly Theatre reservati on calendar and monthly schedule is maintained and communicated.
14. Ensures professional, effective and efficient daily operations of the theater to include ample staffing, hours of operations, marketing requests, and achieving exceptional customer service standards.
15. Oversees the inventory, maintenance, preservation and upgrades of equipment and ensures professional appearance and standards of safety, cleanliness and organization of theater.
16. Oversees the rental requests for the Lilly Theater and the creation of a monthly schedule that includes rentals.
17. Collaborates with the Supervisor/Chief Technician on technical requirements and technical support. Ensures proper staffing for after-hour events for theaters.
18. Creates, maintains and communicates Lilly Theater monthly schedule and production schedule. Leads monthly Lilly Theater meetings.
19. Develops, allocates, monitors and manages the annual financial plan for the theater. Responsible for d eveloping, monitoring and reporting a budget for each play.
20. Responsible for ensuring accurate documentation of attendance numbers for the theater.
21. Selects, hires, nurtures, and retains the most skilled and diverse full-time and part-time staff.
22. Assists with front-of-house duties.
23. Liaison for the museum and the theater community and universities. Builds and maintains beneficial relationships. Attends local theater productions on a regular basis.

Lilly Theatre Technical Supervisor

OVERVIEW:
Responsible, in conjunction with Lilly Theatre Manager for overall technical operations of the Lilly Theatre and the maintenance and upkeep of all equipment. Working in tandem with the Exhibits Production team, takes the lead in set construction and maintenance of all Lilly Theatre productions. Oversees the seeking out and supervision of production teams, including lighting, sound, and props, and assists Theatre Manager in negotiating contracts and securing services of designers. Works with Manager and Production Assistant/Stage Manager to lead production meetings. During production, splits board operation/backstage crew duties with Production Assistant/Stage Manager. Serves as primary contact for technical requirements for rentals and special events.

 

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITES:
1. In conjunction with Lilly Theatre Manager, responsible for overall technical operations of Lilly Theatre, including seeking out and supervising designers for lighting, sound, and props, as well as negotiation of contracts and hiring of production design teams.

2. Assumes lead position and building/carpentry responsibilities in construction of all Lilly Theatre productions, working with Exhibit Production on construction, load-in, maintenance and strike of each set.

3. Coordinates production schedule for all technical staff.

4. Takes the lead in hang and focus of lights for each production, based upon the lighting design.

5. Maintains regular contact with stage manager to ensure full knowledge of each production's needs, including changes to original production plans, and ensures that the technical needs of each production are met.

6. Oversees upkeep of all technical equipment in Lilly Theatre and provides leadership in technical innovations.

7. Maintains an organized, safe and professional physical environment, including the control booth, backstage area, dressing rooms, loft and stage. Maintains inventory and storage of all equipment, props, and set pieces

8. Splits board operation/backstage crew duties with Stage Manager and/or Sound Assistant.

9. Strikes, cleans and stores props and technical equipment of shows on and off-site.

10. Coordinates technical requirements for rentals and events, including set up and strike of equipment, and works with Theatre Manager and Stage Manager to run special events.

11. Develops and maintains design and properties for Lilly Theatre mini-stage for each production.

12. Stands i n for Theatre Manager as needed for duties related to the Lilly Theatre.

 

REQUIREMENTS:
1. BA degree in technical theatre, with a focus on design and construction; or equivalent experience of at least 5 years duration.
2. Experienced carpenter with extensive experience in set construction. Must be able to interpret blueprints for set construction.
3. Experience and working knowledge of technical theatre operations, including but not limited to lighting and sound.
4. Proven track record of team management, delegation, and organization.
5. Ability to work with a dynamic staff with a variety of backgrounds and professional experiences.
6. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
7. Attention to detail and ability to handle multiple responsibilities.
8. Excellent problem solving and negotiation skills.
9. Able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, evenings, and holidays.

Position Description:
Execute musical programming and performances within galleries and other spaces within the museum; and assist in booking and managing contracted performers.

 

Essential Functions:
. Execute musical performances and programming within galleries, main stage, Hamilton Hall, and front foyer;

Theater Coordinator

Position Description: 

Responsible for performing with PTM Playhouse Theater Company. This will include performing scripted shows on main stage and gallery floor, performing improvisationally as costumed characters or with puppets on gallery floor as well as executing structured CD programming. May be asked to perform in any of these capacities off-site. Responsible for completing non-performance duties as assigned.

 

Essential Functions:
. Perform partnered and/or solo in any theatrical experience;
. Coordinate rental for mascot appearances.
. Maintain a high level of professionalism during per formances and other public appearances;
. Assist with general Theater/CD operational tasks as assigned (e.g. scheduling and calendar maintenance, equipment and stage materials management);
. Assist & make suggestions related to developing of new theatrical experiences for museum audiences as directed;

. Support guest performers as needed;

. Train Visitor Experience Hosts with interpretation of heatrical roles;
. Act as role model for adult visitors to encourage open-ended, child-directed play;

. Attend all training sessions and staff meetings;
. Attend PTM Playhouse meetings; and

Minimum Qualifications:
. Three plus yrs. experien ce in implementing theatrical/educational programming for young children;
. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with public and coworkers;
. Bilingual skills preferred;
. Demonstrated experience working with children ages 1-7 preferred;
. Proven ability to work independently;
. AA degree required; Some college courses strongly preferred;
. Must be flexible with work schedule including weekends, holidays and evenings;
. Must have proven ability to prioritize and use time efficiently;
. Ability to represent the museum in a variety of settings;
. Good computer skills and familiarity with email communication tools;
. Requires considerable movement around the museum to monitor activities; and

Manager of Public Programs

The Manager of Public Programs will manage paid and unpaid staff associated with public programs. This position works closely with the Manager of Guest Experience Innovation and Manager of Aquarium Adventures to determine the best mix of innovative, fun, conservation-driven programming for guests visiting Monterey Bay Aquarium with an eye towards supporting both the Guest Experience and overall Monterey Bay Aquarium mission. The manager designs, develops , impl ements and evaluates all public programs at the Monterey Bay Aquarium and oversees the development of a comprehensive training/ongoing coaching model, works with the Manager of Innovation and Sr. Manager of Training/Interpretation to ensure that efforts in the public programs group are supporting and complementing efforts in the many other Guest Experience areas.

 

Functions of this position include; ensuring that public programs are developed and delivered with the highest standards possible, monitor and troubleshoot programs on the floor with an eye towards raising the bar, oversee the weekly/monthly scheduling efforts, and to deliver public programs as needed.

 

Bachelor's Degree in Natural Science or Education preferred. Master's Degree and knowledge of marine environment are highly desirable. Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to supervise and work with a variety of types of professionals, interns and volunteers of various ages. At least fou r year s experience in the management of programming in an aquarium, museum or major attraction. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Experience in teaching and public speaking or theater. Demonstrated competence in program development. Flexibility and the ability to organize and manage a number of diverse tasks simultaneously.
